What Is Ferric Alum?
Ferric alum is the commercial name for ferric grade aluminium sulphate, a coagulant widely used in India to clarify water and treat wastewater. Compared with non-ferric alum, it contains a higher level of iron (Fe), which gives it a light brown to off-white colour. For most water and effluent treatment, that iron does not affect performance, and the grade is noticeably more economical.
When added to water, ferric alum forms aluminium hydroxide flocs that trap suspended particles, silt, organic matter and colloids so they settle out and can be filtered. This makes it one of the most commonly used chemicals in municipal water plants and industrial effluent treatment.
