What Is Ammonium Alum?
Ammonium alum, chemically ammonium aluminium sulphate dodecahydrate (NH₄Al(SO₄)₂·12H₂O), is a double sulphate salt that forms colourless to white crystals. Like other alums, it dissolves in water to release aluminium ions, which makes it an effective coagulant, mordant and astringent.
It is one of the two classic crystalline alums, together with potash alum (potassium alum). The difference is the cation: ammonium alum contains ammonium (NH₄⁺), while potash alum contains potassium (K⁺).
